DRY, SCALY OR ITCHY SKIN

The appearance of dryness is a result of rough, fine scaling skin. The first element of dry skin is a disruption of the epidermis’ natural barrier oils. Dry skin is made worse in the colder winter months when wind and extreme temperatures can lead to severely dehydrated skin. Paradoxically, frequent bathing can also dry out the skin due to
large evaporative losses. This condition may begin as ashy looking skin and can quickly lead to itchy and scaly skin. The condition responds well to a gentle cleansing regimen combined with the use of products that provide barrier protection and deep hydration while topical over-the-counter hydrocortisone products are useful for controlling itchiness.
