If you’ve ever sat on the edge of your bed, trying not to scratch an itch that just won’t quit… then you know eczema isn’t “just dry skin”. It’s uncomfortable, unpredictable, and sometimes, it feels like your skin has a mind of its own.
That’s exactly why National Eczema Week exists. Held every year during the second week of September, it’s led by the National Eczema Society to bring awareness, education, and (maybe most importantly) empathy to the millions of people living with eczema every day.
At First Aid Beauty, this week hits close to home. We see this week as a reminder of why we do what we do. Because skin can be unpredictable. And we know that when your skin’s in SOS mode, you need understanding, calm, and care that actually works.
What Is Eczema?
So, what is eczema, exactly? In short, it’s a group of skin conditions that cause dryness, redness, and inflammation. But really, anyone who’s lived with it knows that definition barely scratches the surface.
The most common form (atopic dermatitis) often shows up as rough, itchy patches that can feel tight, sore, or even sting a little. It can appear on your hands, arms, behind your knees… anywhere, really. One day your skin’s fine, the next… it’s sending out an SOS. Why?
Eczema happens when your skin barrier (this is the layer that locks moisture in and keeps irritants out) isn’t functioning as well as it should. Things like stress, cold weather, or harsh products can make it worse. That’s why gentle, barrier-supporting care matters so much.
At First Aid Beauty, that’s our comfort zone. Our Ultra Repair collection was made with eczema-prone skin in mind: packed with colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, ceramides, and allantoin to help soothe and strengthen the skin barrier.

Why National Eczema Week Matters
1 in 10 people worldwide lives with eczema. That’s millions of people trying to balance their routines, their confidence, and their comfort, often without anyone realizing what they’re going through.
Eczema Awareness Week exists to change that. To make space for honest stories. To replace myths with facts. To help people see that eczema isn’t caused by poor hygiene or something you “did wrong”. It’s a skin condition that deserves care, not shame. And maybe just as importantly, awareness helps people feel seen. Because there’s something powerful and reassuring about realizing: it’s not just you.
At First Aid Beauty, we believe the more people understand eczema, the easier it becomes to talk about it, and to treat it early (which is really important). The good news here is that strengthening the skin barrier, using fragrance-free products, and keeping your skin calm can help break that frustrating flare-up cycle.

Supporting Eczema and Mental Health
Eczema doesn’t stop at the surface. What many non-sufferers don’t know is that it doesn’t just affect you physically. It can sneak into your mood, your confidence, even your sleep. The itch, the flare-ups, the frustration of trying everything… it can wear you down. Plus you start worrying more about how your skin looks instead of how you feel. So really, it’s no surprise that eczema and mental health are closely connected.
Dealing with eczema is a cycle that’s hard to break without self-care and support. If you’re in that cycle, try to give yourself small moments of care. Maybe try to press pause the next time your skin feels especially uncomfortable. Close your eyes, take a slow breath in through your nose, and out through your mouth. It’s small, but it helps your nervous system (and your skin) have a moment of calm and reset.
It’s also a good idea to reach out to others who understand. Online eczema communities are full of people who’ve been there and will remind you that you’re not “too sensitive” or “overreacting”. And if your stress or anxiety feel like too much, talking to a dermatologist and / or therapist can make all the difference.
At First Aid Beauty, we’ve always believed in showing real skin (eczema, texture, flare-ups and all) because those are the stories that matter most.
You don’t need to hide your skin. It’s doing its best. And we’re here to help it along the way.
